Gents,

Mike Ingram will be playing for the 1st XI tomorrow, and hence, I will be skippering the side in his absence.

We will be leaving the Cross at 1130am. I ask that everyone who is in the team is punctual, and that we all support each other in this vital match.

On a final note, weather permitting, I would like to wish those who are playing in the final on Sunday the best of luck. For those who are on the bus, and who may not have received Derek Neil's text, the bus will leave the Cross at 10am prompt.

Gents,

Tremendous effort today from everyone.

David, massive improvement from your previous performance with the bat. Lets see the same in the next game.

Chatts, Josh & Captain Magners, great effort with the bowling. Chatts, although you did not take any wickets, your spell was pivotal in terms of the score that we were going to be set.

The rest of team, that was one of, if not the best fielding performance that I've seen from us this season. Now that we've done this and set the benchmark, lets attain the same level of performance in the next game.

Our next game is on the 9th. However, the 1sts have a home game next week. If you, come along and support them, as this is an important game for them.

Training is on Tuesday and Thursday as always. Let's build on todays performance, by attending training this week. If we put in as hard a graft as today's game, then hopefully results will follow.

These forthcoming weeks will be testing for us, and we all need to work together. Remember we are a team, cricket is a team game, and so, everyone us will have to play a part at some point over the next weeks. There may be some weeks where you either don't get a bat or a bowl.
All I will say in relation to this is that if you don't get either a bat or bowl then don't be disheartened. If you take today's game as a case, I was down to bat no.6, and did not bat.
The reason being that those batting in front of me did their job. If I don't get a bat, then I'll be reasonably happy, as that means that those in front of me are doing their job, and more.

I urge you all, if possible, to attend the training over the next few weeks.

ALPS V MARRESS (26/07/08)

THE FIRST OF THE 5 FINAL MATCHES TO DECIDE THE PROMOTION PLACES.

AS WE ALL WOKE UP TODAY, MARRESS WERE LOOKING AT PLAYING TODAYS GAME WITH ONLY 9 MEN, AS THE FIRST TEAM HAD BORROWED 2 PLAYERS.

JUST AS WE WERE ABOUT TO SET OFF ON OUR JOURNEY THE NEWS CAME THROUGH THAT THE FIRST TEAM GAME WAS OFF DUE TO A WATERLOGGED PITCH. THIS WAS GREAT NEWS FOR THE MARRESS MEN AS THIS MEANT THAT WE COULD GET OUR PLAYERS BACK AND BE ABLE TO FIELD A FULL STRENGTH TEAM.

TODAYS GAME WAS VITAL FOR US AS WE COULD NOT AFFORD TO LOSE OR WE WOULD PROBABLY BE OUT OF THE RUNNING FOR PROMOTION. THE TOSS WOULD BE VITAL.

THE TWO SKIPPERS WENT TO THE WICKET AND AS ALPS SKIPPER THREW THE COIN MIKE INGRAM DECIDED TO GO FOR TAILS(SO FAR THIS SEASON IT HAS FAILED EVERYTIME)SUPRISINGLY MARRESS WON THE TOSS AND SENT THE OPPOSITION INTO BAT.

MARRESS WHO BELIEVE THEY ARE ONE OF THE STRONGEST BOWLING ATTACKS IN THE LEAGUE WERE NOW VERY UP BEAT AT THE PROSPECT OF HOPEFULLY BOWLING THE ALPS OUT.

JOSH CONWAY AND CHATANYIA MUDUNURI OPENED THE BOWLING AND IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE JOSH TOOK HIS FIRST WICKET THANKS TO A WELL TAKEN CATCH BY CAPTAIN MAGNERS AT MID OFF.

A STAND OF APPROX. 35 RUNS OFF THE NEXT 12 OVERS SHOWED THAT ALPS WERE STEADILY BUILDING AN INNINGS. WITH THE SCORE SLOWLY EDGING UP MIKE INGRAM DECIDED TO MAKE THE FIRST BOWLING CHANGE AND BROUGHT HIMSELF ON.

IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE THE BREAKTHROUGH CAME AS MIKE BROKE THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AIDE OF AN EXCELLENT CATCH BY DEBUTANT KAKAKAAN.
WITH CHATTY UN PLAYABLE AT ONE END AND MIKE AT THE OTHER THE BATSMEN STRUGGLED AND IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE THEY HAD THEIR NEXT MAN OUT WITH YET ANOTHER TOP CATCH BY RONNIE G. THIS REMOVED THE EVER STUBORN G PATON WHO OBVIOUSLY IS A MAJOR PLAYER WITHIN THE ALPS TEAM.
MIKE THEN TOOK ANOTHER WICKET WITH A CT AND BOWLED(YES ANOTHER CATCH)AND ALPS WERE STRUGGLING FOR 60 FOR 5, AS MIKE CONTINUED HIS SPELL HE TOOK A FURTHER 2 WICKETS WITH THE AIDE OF A FURTHER 2 CATCHES FROM KETAN AND CONWAY AND MIKE FINISHED WITH A 5FER.
SUPRISINGLY CHATTY COULD NOT MAKE ANY BREAKTHROUGHS AT THE OTHER END AND EVENTUALLY HE ENDED HIS FINE SPELL, THIS BROUGHT JOSH CONWAY BACK TO THE WICKET WHERE HE TOOK A FURTHER 2 WICKETS TO END UP WITH 3 WICKETS.
CRAIG SHARP ENDED THE INNINGS WITH A SHORT SPELL OF TOP CLASS OFFSPIN AND HAD 1 MAN CAUGHT AND ANOTHER RUN OUT WITH A SWIFT PIECE OF KEEPING BY "THE BOBBIE".
THIS MEANT THAT MARRESS WOULD BE CHASING A TOTAL OF 127 TO WIN.

AFTER A VERY GOOD TEA BOBBY MCPHEE AND DAVID INGRAM OPENED THE BATTING AND THE ORDER FROM THE CAPTAIN WAS TO TAKE YOUR TIME AND GET THE RUNS SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY.
WITH JUST 5 RUNS ON THE BOARD THE USUALLY CALM AND DEFENSIVE BOBBIE WENT FOR A MASSIVE HIT AND WAS BOWLED.

THE SKIPPER WAS NOW CONCERNED AS MARRESS HAVE A REPUTATION OF COLAPSING WITH THE BAT. MIKE AND DAVID SET OUT AGAINST SOME TIGHT BOWLING TO TRY AND TURN THE ADVANTAGE TO MARRESS. THE TWO OF THEM EDGED, CUT AND PLODDED THROUGH THE NEXT 15 OVERS AND ONLY ADDED 20 RUNS, HOWEVER THIS WAS TO BE THE START OF AN EXCELLENT PARTNERSHIP THAT WOULD GO ON TO WIN MARRESS THE MATCH. BOTH BATSMEN RESISTED THE TEMPTATION TO EXCELLERATE THE RUN RATE AND KEPT COOL HEADS THROUGHOUT.

DAVID WAS FIRST TO REACH HIS 3RD 50 OF THE SEASON AND THIS WAS QUICKLY FOLLOWED BY MIKE. WITH THE SCORE ON 118 MIKE DECIDED TO ATTACK THE BOWLING AND HE HIT A 4 AND A 6 IN CONCECATIVE DELIVERIES TO END THE MATCH AND LEAVING DAVID ON 55 NOT OUT AND MIKE ON 61 NOT OUT (124 PARTNERSHIP).

AN ALL ROUND EXCELLENT PERFOMANCE ESPECIALLY IN THE FIELD AS MARRESS RECORDED AN ALL TIME RECORD OF TAKING 8 CATCHES.

WE ENTERTAIN ARDROSSAN NEXT AT MARRESS AND SIMILAR EFFORTS WILL BE NEEDED TO REPAY THEM FOR THE TONKING THEY GAVE US EARLIER IN THE SEASON.

Cup finals

Guys

Numbers permitting we are hoping to run a players and supporters bus to the SCU Cup Final which is at Stirling County Cricket Ground in Stirling.

It looks like the cost will remain at £10 return journey for the Bus.

Can you reply to the irvinecricket@aol.com with a reply stating whether you can go. The past few trips have been good fun and would welcome your support again this year for hopefully a winning performance this time.

We need 49 places so first come first served.

We are looking at t shirts as well, again this price has come down from last year at £12 rather than £15 last year as we do not need to pay for the embroidery.

Again if your interested let me know.

Ill try and call you all this week as time means the bus needs to be booked by this Friday.

Ronnie G knows the date of the final and we are avoiding this date for the remaining 2nd X! fixtures.

In relation to the recent match report, Mrs.Park thanks you for the comments. Mrs.Park has welcomed the comments regarding the selection of sandwiches for tea, and will no longer be serving salmon as an option. She has asked that if anyone else has any preferences e.g. tuna and cucumber, ploughmans, then can someone let the VC know. All serious opinions will be considered.

Mrs.Park will also be looking to put some home-made branston pickle into some sandwiches, if someone wishes this.In light of the success of the home-made jam which appeared to go down well with the team, she is willing to sell jars of this if you wish. Prices start from £1 for 340gms.

MARRESS V INVERCLYDE (20/07/08)

The last match before the league splits into 2 groups. Before the start we knew we still needed 1 pt to be certain of a top 6 finish.

We were desperately hoping to win the toss and field first and therefore we would be almost certain of the minimum points required. With Mike Ingram having a terrible record of winning the toss everyone looked with hope as the coin was tossed, no suprise Inverclyde won it and we were sent into bat.

The opening pair were announced and after 10 minutes Mike lost patience with Shahid( had a problem with his jockey's) as he made the decision to open himself with son David.
The innings got off to a slow start and we quickly realised that Inverclyde had only 1 very good bowler who rarely pitched it badly.
After 5 overs Inverclyde made the breakthrough and had David Ingram LBW for 3 runs( this will dent his average now). Next man in was Shahid as he had finally got his underwear sorted out. Shahid quickly attacked the bowling and he and Captain Magners Ingram were turning the screw and starting to get on top when Shahid went for one too many shots and got a top edge straight to one of their fielders.
Marress were now on 41 for 2, but the skipper was secretly worried as he had seen his team fold tamely when batting first many times before. Next in was VC Derek Park or for some reason nicknamed the ODM. It wasn't long before Inverclyde discovered why he was called this as Derek (The Squirrel) dispatched several big blows to the leg side. With the skipper at the other end, He and the VC quickly moved the score onto 78 before Derek was eventually bowled.
Next in was Ronnie Gilliland and with this brought together the two oldest men on the pitch, with the average age being 45 the quick running between the wickets were bound to stop, or so Ronnie G thought. Next delivery and Mike and Ronnie set of for 4 runs(yes actually runs)and Ronnie had to be giving mouth to mouth to revive him after scampering for the 4 runs. With the two old timers at the crease it looked like Marress were going to get the one point they needed to secure a place in the top ten, when Ronnie G was bowled by a delivery that Shane Warne would be proud of.
With the score on 98 for 4 this brought Josh Conway to the crease, Josh had been struggling in recent weeks and he hoped to put things right. With Josh defending his wicket with ease at one end and Mike attacking at the other, Marress cruised onto 113 before Mike edged one to first slip and he was out for another fine knock of 53.
With the departure of the skipper it seemed likely that we would soon collapse and struggle to get many more runs. Especially as 2 quick wickets followed with the loss of Conway and Cooney.
With the score now 122 for 7 the skipper was not expecting what was about to happen. Messr's Doolan & Mudunuri edged, chipped, blasted and stroked their way to a magnificent 64 partnership before Mudunuri was crazily run out by Jamie Doolan.
The score had now moved onto 186 for 8 and the game complection had changed and swung in favour of Marress. Doolan was joined by young Robbie Ferguson and the 2 of them put on another great stand of 19 and the moved the score onto 205 before Robbie was ct.Jamie Doolan made a PB of 47 not out and held the middle order together, well done Jamie.

After another top rate tea from Mrs Park we set out to try and knock the inverclyde team. It was a slow start and Inverclyde dug deep and battled well and the opening bowlers of Conway and Mudunuri could not get the breakthrough the skipper made the first change and brought on James Cooney, Cooney soon made the breakthrough as he gained the first of 3 wickets, with wickets not coming easily, the skipper made several bowling changes, but struggled to make any impression.
It was quickly becoming obvious that Inverclyde were not going to try and reach the Marress total as they rarely made any attacking shots.Overs went by and Inverclyde coped quite well with everything we threw at them.

A further 2 wickets fell during their innings and the game ended with Inverclyde on 155 for 5.

This result leaves Marress firmly set for the last 5 games against the top 6 and Inverclyde will need to wait and see how results went over the weekend.

We travel to the Alps next week and similar batting will be needed, but we will need to up our game on the field.

Marress v Windyedge (05/07/08)

Marress’ title hopes were virtually bowled over last week against Rouken Glen and Captain “Kopperburg” Mike Ingram was hoping for a good response from his team this weekend against struggling Glasgow Accies 4th 11.
Rain was going to play a part in Saturday’s game and with that in mind Mike was hoping that his strong bowling attack would be able to remove the opposition’s batsmen in quick time and knock over the runs quickly!!! However 10th game of the season and yet again another “loss toss” and Marress were put into bat.
With opening batsman David Ingram returning to the action this week he was given the responsibility to get the innings under way with a rather hung over Bobby McPhee. As the rain poured Marress got off to a great start slowly knocking 3-4 runs an over and were looking rather comfortable. Marress’s previous best opening partnership was Mike Ingram and Adam Pieroni scoring 143 against Glasgow Accies 3rd 11 in 2005 and this pairing was looking good to achieving this record. At the drinks break Marress were 111 without loss and Bobby was on 50 and chasing his own personal record which everyone will know by now was his marvellous 64* against Hillhead in 1994.
After drinks Marress got off to a dodgy start with bad calling between the wickets, David managed to run two whilst Bobby shouted “NO” to an easy single past the bowler and luckily the fielder threw the ball to the wrong end and David managed to scramble back to his crease. However, Bobby wasn’t so lucky and ran himself out a few balls later on an impressive 51 and more importantly an opening partnership of 112 almost double last weeks efforts for the whole team. Next in was “Old Man” Ingram and he quickly stamped his authority to the game with a top edge for 6 and another two 4’s off one over. David quickly achieved his 50 shortly after, although some dodgy counting did delay it a little, and was then trapped lbw trying to play a silly shot across the line of a straight ball. At 154-2 everything was going well until two quick wickets came for Josh and the reliable Ronnie G, both miss reading deliveries. At 160-4 the game was in the balance until “The Squirrel(or is it Rameesh Raja)” entered the pitch. He saw off some early deliveries and then decided to smash the opening bowler for two 4’s in two deliveries and he was on his way. The score reached 196 and unfortunately Derek was caught going for another big hit on 21, a new personal best for the vice captain who was in great display during his innings. This allowed Cooney to try and prove his acquisitions as a batsman and not just a bowler and with some positive words from Derek, I quote: “Don’t worry everyone else has scored runs just make sure you don’t get a duck or your batting 11 next week!!!” After a few nervous deliveries Cooney cut a decent bowl for four and was off the mark. Mike had decided in the 41st over that he wanted everyone to get a bat so he went after every delivery as if he was going to hit it out the park but the only thing he was hitting was thin air and luckily for him the bowling was just wide off the off stump. The rain came in the 43rd over so both captains agreed to delay the game until the rain had stopped again.
Shortly after play resumed and with Mike realising that he was on 44 he decided to calm his innings down a little and ensure that he hit his second 50 of the season. He managed to do so relatively quickly and then the next delivery he was caught leaving David with a smile on his face that he had yet again out scored his dad. The Doc was next in, and was then next out first ball after some confusion(you need to read the rules, Ronnie G can help you there) on his part that he didn’t realise that his foot must cross the line and not be on it!!! Cooney and Adam both failed to make any impact scoring just 8 runs between them but newly signed player Ketan hit a massive 6 out the ground and some nice shots to rush on to a quick 12 and was then sadly bowled. Ally managed to stay not out again and his run of 11 matches and only being out once, which he claims was the bats fault, continues. The score ended on a remarkable 254 a.o, which Kaptain Kopperburg was extremely happy about at the teatime break.
After an exceptional tea thanks to Mrs Park (Derek’s mum not wife!!!) the Marress bowling attack felt really confident of finishing the opposition off rather quickly, although we had already lost two players to a tea party and one had to go and stand under his girlfriends thumb!!! The Doc and Josh opened the bowling and in the second over Josh had quickly dismissed one of the openers for a duck. After some poor bowling by Chatty, Mike give him a little warning that he might be coming off by warming up and practicing a few deliveries but Chatty wasn’t going to give up that easily by clean bowling their number 3. Josh continued his good start with dismissing their other opener but started to run out of puff. So captain Mike decided that it was to be the Ingram attack and with David being short of form this season with the ball was a huge risk to bowl him so early in the innings. With Mike having a back problem he decided not to bowl his usual 80 mph swinging deliveries and bowl spin??? Or Bobby called it slow pish!!! However, whatever it was it was effective with him bowling 9 overs for just 12 runs and picking up 3 wickets in the process. Son, David, at the other end started off really slowly and bowled some really sub standard stuff and it took him until the third over to get into a rhythm and took 2 wickets for 26 runs in his spell. Ketan bowled a good line and length to frustrate the batsman to allow Marress’s secret weapon D.P to bowl just two balls to finish off the innings. Windyedge only managed to score 91 runs, however it was a really good performance from Marress who are still hoping for promotion this season. There is no game next weekend however our final game before the league splits is on the same day as the Scottish Cup Semi Final so 1st 11 captain Stuart will have a dilemma on wither he wants a higher standard of cricket for his second team or a Cup final for the second year in a row???
The MOM award for this match was a tough decision, but after several days of deliberation it has been awarded to David Ingram for another fine opening batting display and a good bowling return.

Folks,

I have provisionally booked the 5s at Irvine Royal from end August-start April 2009, at 2030hrs every Thursday.

However, there are one or two things needed for the football to be a success again:

a) A ball (which I don't have). I'll purchase a replica Euro 2008 ball for this.
b) Goalkeeping Gloves for Deky "the Gardener/silver old-fox" Neil. For those that don't know, Deky played a game last year in goals, wearing gloves that should really have been used when pruning rosebushes.
c) Coaching for Peter Gilchrist from Stewart, with specific reference to passing the ball.

With reference to the dream-team, under 30s, there isn't anything that needs addressed, other than Tony the Tiger ensuring that his hair, is kept to a reasonable length.

ROUKEN GLEN V MARRESS (28-06-08)

WITH MARRESS SITTING 2ND IN THE LEAGUE AND ROUKEN GLEN IN 4TH, IT WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE LIKELY THAT ROUKEN GLEN WOULD WANT THE GAME TO GO AHEAD AT ALL COST.
SETTING OFF FROM IRVINE WITH THE RAIN LASHING DOWN, IT SEEMED ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE THAT WE WOULD BE PLAYING ANY CRICKET TODAY. AS WE DROVE CLOSER TO THE GROUND THE CLOUDS BEGAN TO OPEN AND IT WAS IF WE WERE IN ANOTHER WORLD, THE SUN WAS ALMOST SHINING AND THERE WAS NO RAIN. THE GROUND HAD OBVIOUSLY HAD RAIN ON IT AT SOME POINT(THE PUDDLES ON THE PITCH GAVE THIS AWAY) YET THE WICKET WAS FINE.
AFTER A DELAYED START THE SKIPPERS TOSSED THE COIN AND MIKE INGRAM FOR MARRESS WON IT. THE TEAM HAD TALKED ABOUT BATTING PRIOR TO THE TOSS AS WE APPEARED TO HAVE A VERY STRONG BATTING LINE UP. NORMALLY THE SKIPPER WOULD ALWAYS OPT TO FIELD FIRST,BUT ON THIS OCCASION HE DECIDED TO BAT(TURNED OUT TO BE A BIG MISTAKE).
MARRESS OPENED WITH SHARP AND MUDUNURI AND IT WAS SOON REALISED WHY ROUKEN GLEN HAD BEEN STEADILY PROGRESSING UP THE LEAGUE, THEY HAD POSSIBLY 2 OF THE BEST BOWLERS IN THE LEAGUE. IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE MARRESS WERE IN TROUBLE AND LOSING WICKETS FOR VERY FEW RUNS. WICKET AFTER WICKET FELL AND EVEN THE ADDITION OF TOP BATSMAN ROBBIE STEWART COULDN'T DO MUCH AGAINST THE ROUKEN GLEN ATTACK AND EVENTUALLY WE WERE ALL OUT FOR A PATHETIC 61 RUNS.

A QUICK TURN AROUND AND WE SET OUT TO TRY AND GET A QUICK BREAKTHROUGH AND IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE WE GOT OUR FIRST WICKET. OPENING BOWLERS CONWAY AND MUDUNURI BOWLED A GOOD LINE AND AT ONE STAGE WE HAD THE OPOSITION 54 FOR 7 AND WERE STILL IN WITH A SLIM CHANCE OF POSSIBLE VICTORY. SADLY WE COULD NOT GET ANOTHER BREAKTHROUGH AND THEY STUMBLED OVER THE WINNING LINE.
ON REFLECTION THE WINNING OF THE TOSS WAS VITAL AND A LESSON WAS LEARNT (DO NOT BAT FIRST) AS WE SEEM TO BE A BETTER TEAM WHEN CHASING A SCORE.

THIS DEFEAT HAS BLOWING THE LEAGUE WIDE OPEN FOR WHAT WOULD APPEAR TO BE A 5 HORSE RACE FOR THE SECOND SPOT.

WE WELCOME THE VISIT OF WINDYEDGE NEXT WEEK, DEFEAT IS UNTHINKABLE AND A MASSIVE EFFORT IS NEEDED BY ALL.

Cooney (The Crow)- Stick to what you are recognised for, and not what you think you are recognised for.
David (Tony the Tiger)- Same as Cooney.

Doolan (The Donkey)- Protect, and then play. If you want to bat higher up the order, then you need to do this.

Ketan (The Cat)- Seek sponsorship with Rowntrees/Nestle.

Robbie (The Rhino)- Ask for an advance from the family vault. I can't recall ever seeing your wallet. Can David confirm if Robbie has a wallet, or not?

Chatts (the Cheetah)- Improved performance needed next week. Cooney the Chimpanzee is on your trail.

Josh (the Jackal)- Keep the bowling straight. The Squirrel may have the stamina for a half-marathon, but he ain't going to run after poor bowling (unless there's a packet of KP Dry-roasted at the end).

ANOTHER FINE SUNNY DAY AND SUPRISINGLY THE MARRESS MEN SET OFF ON THEIR LONG JOURNEY WITH A FULL TEAM (A SIGHT MORE RARE THAN ROBBIE FERGUSONS WALLET).
THE TEAM WAS IN A CONFIDENT MOOD AS WE WERE NOW TRYING TO EQUAL A CLUB RECORD SET IN 1963. COULD WE GET A FIFTH WIN IN A ROW? LOOKING AT THE PREVIOUS RESULTS A VICTORY WAS EXPECTED AS GATEHOUSE SEEMED TO BE STRUGGLING TO PUT BIG TOTALS ON THE BOARD.
ON ARRIVAL THE GROUND LOOKED A PICTURE AND WE WERE WARMLY WELCOMED BY THE OPPOSITION.
DURING THE TEAM MEETING (OUTSIDE THE GREASY SPOON)EVERYONE HOPED THAT WE FIELDED FIRST AS THE WICKET HAD A REPUTATION OF BEING BETTER IN THE SECOND INNINGS, THE SKIPPER SECRETLY WANTED TO BAT FIRST SO AS TO GIVE EVERYONE SOME BATTING PRACTISE AND HOPEFULLY SET A BIG TOTAL.
WELL NO MATTER HOW MUCH PRE-PLANNING GOES ON IT ALL HINGES ON THE COIN TOSS, AND NO SUPRISE WE LOST THE TOSS AND THEY ELECTED TO BAT.

SKIPPER MIKE INGRAM OPENED THE BOWLING WITH JOSH CONWAY AND CHATANIYA MUDUNURI AND THE TEAM SET ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS. BOTH BOWLERS WERE STEADY, BUT NOTHING WAS REALLY HAPPENING, ESPECIALLY AT JC'S END AS JOSH WAS BOWLING A LINE CONSISTENTLY OUTSIDE THE LINE BUT NEVER REALLY THREATENING THE BATSMAN. WITH THE BOUNDARY IN CLOSE AND THE OUTFIELD LIKE A BOWLING GREEN THE BALL RACED PAST FIELDERS WITH EASE.
WITH THE OPPOSITION ON 19 THE SKIPPER MADE A CHANGE OF BOWLING ATTACK AND BROUGHT ON JAMES COONEY FOR JOSH CONWAY.
THE NEXT OVER CHATTY MADE THE BREAKTHROUGH AND THEN QUICKLY TOOK A SECOND WICKET.
AT THE OTHER END JAMES COONEY STARTED WHAT TURNED OUT TO BE HIS BEST EVER BOWLING FIGURES, HE STEADILY WITTLED OUT 6 MORE WICKETS AND FINISHED WITH AN IMPRESSIVE 14 OVERS FOR 36 RUNS. THIS WAS A PERSONAL BEST AND SECURELY CEMENTS HIM AS THE TOP WICKET TAKER THIS SEASON. WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW PLAYER KETAN KITKAT HE CLEANED UP THE INNINGS WITH A FINE DELIVERY AND WE HAD THEM IN THE HOUSE (HUT) FOR 100.
AFTER A FINE TEA WITH THE OPPOSITION AND A FEW MICE ETC THE BIG QUESTION AS ALWAYS WAS COULD WE KEEP OUR CONCENTRATION AND SEE THE JOB THROUGH.
THE OPENING PAIR WERE DAVID INGRAM AND JAMES COONEY. WELL IT WAS N'T LONG BEFORE ONE OF THE RECOGNISED BATSMAN WAS OUT. JAMES COONEY LEAVING A DELIVERY THAT SHOULD HAVE GONE PAST HIS LEG STUMP, ONLY FOR COONEY TO STICK HIS LEG IN THE WAY OF IT AND DEFLECT IT ONTO HIS STUMPES AND HE WAS BOWLED FOR 0. THIS INTODUCED THE OLD YIN MIKE INGRAM, COULD FATHER AND SON SEE THE TEAM OVER THE WINNING LINE. AFTER A FEW QUICK BLOWS TO THE BOUNDARY MIKE (SUFFERING FROM A HEADACHE)WAS BOWLED FOR A MISELY 14 RUNS AND WITH THE SCORE ONLY ON 28 FOR 2 THIS WAS NOW GOING TO BE A TOUGH CHALLENGE, ESPECIALLY AS WHENEVER MIKE HAS BEEN BOWLED EARLY IN THE INNINGS THE TEAM VERY RARELY WINS.
THE NEXT BATSMAN IN WAS THE IMPROVING JAMIE DOOLAN, HE AND DAVID BATTED SENSIBLY AND TOOK NO CHANCES, WITH JAMIE ON 5 HE MADE HIS FIRST ATTACKING SHOT OF THE DAY AND WAS CLEAN BOWLED(MAYBE THIS IS A LESSON JAMIE WILL LEARN FROM AND KEEP ON DEFENDING), THE SCORE WAS NOW 43 FOR 3 AND STILL ALONG WAY FROM VICTORY.
WHEN THE GOING IS GETTING TOUGH WHO BETTER TO BRING TO THE CREASE THAN THE VERY OLD YIN(DAVY JONES)RONNIE GILLILAND. WITH A COMBINATION OF YOUTH AND EXPERIENCE THE 2 BATSMAN GOT ON TOP OF BOWLING AND WITH DAVID BEING THE DOMINATOR HE BEGAN TO HIT THE BALL ALL AROUND THE GROUND AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE OLD YIN THEY MOVED THE SCORE ONTO 97 BEFORE ONCE AGAIN OLD (DAVEY JONES) FAILED TO BRING THE SHIP ALL THE WAY INTO THE DOCK AND WAS CAUGHT GOING FOR THE WINNING RUNS FOR A VERY IMPORTANT 11 RUNS.
THIS BROUGHT YOUNG JOSH CONWAY TO THE CREASE WHO QUICKLY GOT THE WINING RUNS AND THE GAME WAS WON.
A FANTASTIC MATURE KNOCK BY DAVID INGRAM SAW US WIN THIS GAME WITH AN UNBEATEN 45.
ANOTHER WIN AND THE CLUB RECORD WAS EQUALLED. TO BEAT THE RECORD WE NOW HAVE A TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH WITH THE ALPS AND THE WINNERS OF THIS MATCH WILL LIKELY WIN THE LEAGUE.A BIG CROWD IS EXPECTED AT THIS MATCH NEXT SUNDAY, SO EARLY ARRIVAL IS RECCOMMENDED IF YOU WANT THE BEST SEATS.

ARDENCAPLE V MARRESS MATCH REPORT (07/06/08)

Another fantastic scorcher of a day on saturday and as the team began to turn up at the cross ready for the long journey, the phone began to ring. Within 1 hour we had lost 3 players with various excuses. The best being that of the Legend Tam Anderson as he explained that his house and the surrounding area had been secured by the local police and no one was getting in or out of the area.(what will someone come up with next week).
Enough of the background useless info and onto the more serious topic.
we arrived at Helensboro with only 8 men and were desperate to field first, luckily the skipper won the toss and sent them into bat.
It was going to be a long hard slog for the team and so it turned out to be one. We made slow progress into the match and just as the skipper was looking to make a change from the opening bowler (chatty) he took his first of 2 wickets. Chatty bowled 15 overs straight through and finished with great figures, at the other end James cooney was having an unusual off day and was quickly replaced by Josh conway. Once Josh got his line right he eventually took 3 wickets in another fine 15 over spell.
Mike Ingram eventually brought himself on to bowl and wrapped the opposition tail up with 4 quick wickets. The ever virsitile Craig Sharp also came onto bowl and claimed a wicket, this was after he had kept wicket for most of the game. During his spell behind the stumps, Craig showed why he is rated as high as the second best keeper in the club.
Eventually Helensboro were all out for 156. a score that was competetive but also achieveable. The only doubt was the lack of players.

After a top class tea(thanks Ardencaple) Sharp and Conway opened the batting, both started brightly until Conway was caught playing a familiar lack lustre shot and he was out for 12. In came the skipper Mike Ingram and he and Sharp battled away against some very good bowling. The two of them put on a stand of 81 before Sharp had a rare rush of blood and was stumped charging down the wicket at the bowler. He was out for an excellent 25. With the game in the balance the next batsman was Jamie doolan (Birthday Boy)and he made a quick 9 runs before being caught, the score was now 124 for 3 and the win was almost in sight.
Old timer ronnie G was in next and uncharacheristically he went for a big shot and played onto his stumps for 4. We are now 132 for 4 and a hint of desperation was starting to show. In came Vice Captain Derek Park and he tried to revert to his tried and tested method of batting, but sadly this was not his day and was clean bowled for 0. Now we were 134 for 5. Thankfully the ever calm Skipper was at the other end and he took matters into his own hands and dominated the bowling hitting 7 fours and 1 massive 6 ( possibly the biggest ever seen), but with only 6 runs needed to win Mike was suprisingly bowled for 66.
This left the last 2 batsman Chatty and Cooney to try and get us over the winning line. with the tension high, Cooney hit his first ball straight to the opposition Capt and somehow he dropped it (phew!)Cooney then defended for all his worth and then left it to chatty to go on to hit the winning runs and end a magnificent day of cricket for the Marress Men.

Next week we travel to Gatehouse of Fleet and looking at recent results we should be able to come back with the 25 points.

WHITEINCH V MARRESS MATCH REORT (31-05-08)

A GLORIOUS DAY FOR CRICKET, BEGAN WITH THE CUSTOMERY COIN TOSS AND ONCE AGAIN MIKE INGRAM LOST THE TOSS AND THE OPPOSITION ELECTED TO BAT.
MIKE INGRAM QUITELY CHUCKLED TO HIMSELF AS UNKNOWN TO THE OPPOSITION CAPT, I WAS LOOSING 2 OF MY PLAYERS AT 4.45PM AND THE PRE-GAME PLAN WAS TO FIELD FIRST AND ALLOW THE 2 PLAYERS TO OPEN THE BATTING AND GRAB AS MANY RUNS AS POSSIBLE BEFORE THEY LEFT.

THE GAME STARTED AND IN FAMILIAR FASHION IT WAS THE TOP WICKET TAKER THIS SEASON(JAMES COONEY) WHO MADE THE BREAKTHROUGH. HE DELIVERED A BEAUTIFUL BALL AND THE BATSMEN COULD ONLY FEND IT OFF STRAIGHT INTO CLOSE IN FIELDER CHATTY MUDUNURI HANDS.
COONEY THEN DELIVERED SIMILAR DELIVERIES TO THE NEXT BATSMEN AND HE SOON CLAIMED HIS SECOND WICKET AND ONCE AGAIN IT WAS CHATTY THAT CAUGHT IT. A FEW OVERS LATER AND COONEY CLEAN BOWLED THE NEXT BATSMAN. COONEY WAS SHOWING THE PROMISE THAT HE HAS SHOWN ALL SEASON AND HAS QUICKLY ESTABLISHED HIMSELF AS THE SECOND BEST BOWLER IN THE TEAM(YOU CAN DECIDE WHO IS FIRST).
AT THE OTHER END, OLD TIMER MIKE INGRAM WAS BOWLING STEADY, AND HAD A FEW DROPPED CATCHES ALONG THE WAY. EVENTUALLY MIKE INGRAM GOT HIS FIRST WICKET AS NEW PLAYER MUSTAPHA KHAN CAUGHT HIS FIRST CATCH FOR THE CLUB.
THE GAME WAS WITHIN OUR SITES AND MIKE INGRAM DECIDED TO MAKE 2 BOWLING CHANGES AND INTRODUCED CHATTY AND MUSTAPHA KHAN TO THE ATTACK.
IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE CHATTY WAS ON THE SCORE CARD AND HE TOOK HIS FIRST OF 4 QUICK WICKETS AND WAS SUPPORTED BY SOME GREAT PACE BOWLING AT THE OTHER END BY MUSTAPHA. MUSTAPHA ALSO TOOK 2 WICKETS IN A FINE SPELL OF BOWLING AND WAS VERY UNLUCKY NOT TO GET 3 AS DAVID INGRAM BROUGHT OFF A WONDER CATCH CLOSE IN, ONLY FOR THE OPPOSITION TO RULE THAT IT TOUCHED THE GROUND.THE ONLY THING THIS WRONG DECISION DID WAS GET US MOTIVATED AND MORE COMPETITIVE.(THE LAST THING ANY TEAM SHOULD DO IS MAKE US ANGRY, ESPECIALLY IF THE LEGENDARY TAM ANDERSON IS IN YOUR TEAM)
ANOTHER TOP DISPLAY BY THE MARRESS MEN IN THE FIELD AND CONFIRMED THEMSELVES AS THE BEST BOWLING ATTACK (IN MY OPINION) IN THE LEAGUE AS THEY FINALLY HAD THE OPPOSITION 120 ALL OUT IN 29 OVERS.
THE ANSWER AS ALWAYS IS HOW COULD WE PERFORM WITH THE BAT.

WITH A QUICK TURN AROUND DUE TO MESSR'S COONEY AND CHATTY HAVING TO LEAVE AT 4.45PM THE 2 STRIKE BOWLERS OPENED THE BATTING AT 3.30PM. IT WAS A SLOW START FOR THE TWO OF THEM AND EVENTUALLY THEY BATTLED THERE WAY TO DOUBLE FIGURES. THE FIRST WICKET TO FALL WAS YOUNG COONEY AS HE WAS CLEANED BOWLED FOR 16. THIS BROUGHT CAPT MIKE INGRAM TO THE CREASE AND AS THEY BATTED THEY COULD HEAR CALLS FROM THE BENCH THAT CHATTY ONLY HAD 20 MINUTES LEFT BEFORE HE NEEDED TO GO. ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER CHATTY WENT FOR A BIG SHOT DUE TO TIME RUNNING OUT AND HE WAS CAUGHT. THE 2 MEN SET OFF TO RETURN TO IRVINE TO SEE IF THEY COULD PULL(PINTS) AND THIS LEFT THE REST OF THE TEAM TO DO BATTLE.
JOSH TAYLOR CAME TO THE WICKET NEXT AND A LOT OF EXPECTATIONS WERE HOPED FOR, ESPECIALLY AFTER HIS BRILLIANT KNOCK THE PREVIOUS WEEK. JOSH STARTED BOLDLY AND CRASHED A 4 EARLY ON, BUT SADLY HE WAS CAUGHT BEHIND TRYING TO GO FOR ANOTHER BIG ONE.
THE NEXT BATSMAN IN WAS VERY OLD TIMER, RONNIE GILLILAND. WITH 2 OLD TIMERS AT THE CREASE IT WAS MENTIONED THAT A COUPLE OF WHEEL CHAIRS SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO THE WICKET, BUT THIS WAS DECLINED.
THE GREAT THING WITH OLD TIMERS IS THAT THEY HAVE LOTS OF EXPERIENCE TO CALL UPON AND IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE THE 2 OF THEM BATTED THE MARRESS TEAM TO WITHIN WINNING DISTANCE. WITH THE SCORE ON 119 RONNIE TOP EDGED ONE AND HE FELL FOR 32 ( A GREAT KNOCK). THIS BROUGHT YOUNG DAVID INGRAM TO THE MIDDLE WITH THE SIDE ONLY NEEDING 2 RUNS TO WIN. A QUICK SINGLE NEXT BALL BROUGHT THE TEAMS LEVEL AND WITH MIKE ON STRIKE, IT SEEMED FITTING THAT HE SHOULD GET THE WINNING RUN. SADLY MIKE PLAYED A BAD SHOT AND HE WAS CAUGHT FOR 26, AND THIS LEFT VICE CAPTAIN DEREK PARK TO DO THE HONOURS , WHICH HE DID WITH SUCH ELEGANCE AS HE CRACKED THE BALL FOR 4 OFF THE SECOND BALL.
A GREAT VICTORY WHICH SHOULD TAKE US INTO THE TOP 3.

2nd XI teams and new league format season 2008

Division 5 - 2008 Season

Teams in Division 5 will play each other once in the first 13 weeks of the season. At this point the division will split with the top 6 playing each other once in a "round robin" to decide the promotion places and the bottom 7 will play another "round robin" for the completely new "Tom Kerr Trophy". These "round robin" phases will be played for normal league points which will be added to the points gained in the first part of the season and the percentages will be calculated on the full aggregate points etc. It is expected that these "round robin" matches will be arranged mutually between the clubs involved but if the clubs cannot agree the Committee will make arrangements in stead.

NOTE- if either of the 2 "duplicate teams" (Memorial Field & Glw Accies 4th) finish in the top 6 they will not go to the top group "round robin" -their place will be taken by the next eligible team(s) in the league table.

The Committee has made these decisions to allow the 3 new teams (requesting a place) to enter the league to show that we are encouraging cricket to prosper in the West. It would have been contrary to the aims of the Union to deny these sides to play LEAGUE cricket. The Committee realise that these decisions may not be met with universal approval but we believe the options taken are the best available and in keeping with the "Spirit of the game".

Firstly a quick introduction, I am Iain Stewart the new Club Development Manager for Cricket Scotland in the West.I am hosting a whole West Scotland Cricket Development Meeting at Poloc CC (G43 1AT) 7.30-8.45pm on Thu 31st Jan ’08. All Club Committees & Members Welcome, as well as office bearers from the various leagues and associations. This will be a great chance for me to meet many people that I have not as yet met up with. Although I have all Tony Judd and Steve Seligman’s detailed documents concerning the area’s clubs I could do with a real update on where each club is right now.Also I will have forms for clubs un-affiliated to Cricket Scotland if they wish to join and more information on the TopClub Accreditation scheme which is of increasing importance to undertake and advance up the levels (Active, Approved, Bronze, Silver & Gold). The evening will touch on several aspects of cricket development in the area and I would urge you to attend if possible or ensure there is representation from your club/association.Any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or on my mobile. Old Yins Continue Dynasty...Just

The old yins continued their recent 5s dominance with a narrow 3-2 victory.

Drew Parsons grabbed the controversial late winner with a George McCluskey circa Scottish Cup final 1980 type flicked deflection only just crossing the line. Thankfully hothead David Ingram managed to keep his volatile temper in check to make sure the 1980 references didn't extend to the after match riot......

Commander Graham Owens made a passable impression of Peter Latchford with an inspired performance that secured the victory.

With the tackles starting to fly and the new arrivals of Gary and Ali giving the youngsters some added impetus it is bound to be fraught in the upcoming weeks. Watch this space for further developments.......

Young Guns Misfire

The old stagers put the Irvine youngsters to the sword, 10-4 when we stopped counting, at the Marres 5's tonight. Despite an outstanding performance in goal by the Barcelona bound Craig Sharp the superior passing and organisation of the old yins, coupled with the 15 minute energetic contribution of pacy ringer Roscoe put the result beyond doubt.

Goal of the night was finished by Stuart McCallum after a sweet passing move that would surely have found favour with Neeskens, Cruyff & Rep. The challenge is laid for next week and the youngsters will need more than the bullocking runs of Park and Conway if they are going to reverse this defeat. Game on!

Mr.Mudunuri- Can I point out that the Great North Run is a half-marathon, and is not a 10k as previously stated. I can confidently state that I will do this event in a maximum time of 2hrs, and therefore, between 2-3 hrs is not an option (unless there are fit ladies running with me). All at the club should know that I was a 100 mts record-holder at u-16 level, and that I have trained with numerous grade athletes, namely:

Folks,

I'm looking to try and organise a weekly football game at Irvine Royal Academy. Initially, I'd be looking to play outdoors on a Thursday night until mid/end November. If this proves popular, then I may look at looking at indoor facilities over the Winter period.
Irvine Royal has one park, which can be split into 5-a-side pitches. The cost of 1 5-a-side park would be £20 per hour. This cost would also include floodlights.
If you are interested in playing, then please let me know a.s.a.p.

Hi Everybody,

Even though the season has now finished, this does not mean that behind the scenes work does not continue.

I myself have been thinking about next season and have came up with an idea that may resolve difficult fixture problems.

I would like to see everyone send myself a list of their intended holidays and I will keep a diary of all dates.
Once I have a complete log of dates I will then send the list of hot spots to Ronnie Gilliland so as he can do his best to avoid the main dates with both teams playing.

This can only work if I get this info from you, so get your holidays booked asap.

I also intend to try and get a tour match with my old club (Felling) on the agenda again. If interested reply asap. Dates will be announced early next year.

Try and keep in touch and look out for the future fund raising events that will be coming soon. We need everyone to support the club as much as possible and not let the usual people do it all.

I don't think it is appropriate to talk about "Derek Neill" or "Stewart McCallum" as your idols. I suggest that whoever you are, you need to get out more, and find something else to do. This club is a professional outfit, and does not need infantile comments from yourself, or anyone else for that matter.
People like Stewart McCallum and Derek Neill have worked tirelessly this year, to keep the club in Division 1. From a personal stance, I have seen on numerous occassions, how pivotal Stewarts' batting has been the team in retaining their status.
For future reference, please identify yourself if posting anonymously, by placing your name at the end of your comment. Failure to do this may result in further action being taken by The Squirrel.

Hillend vs Marress (01/09)

Marress managed to finish their season on a high by defeating bottom-of-the-league Hillend in a game that will be remembered for many years to come.

Leaving Irvine at 11am, we were concerned that this titanic game may not have taken place. All the team were keen for the game to go head, and with the 1sts only playing on Sunday, Irvine were able to call upon two stalwarts of the club, in the shape of Robbie Stewart, and according to previous reports, the idolised Stewart McCallum.

Capt. Birds Eye, Mike Ingram lost the toss, and the Hillend captain elected to bat first. Mike decided to open the bowling with Tony the Tiger, David Ingram, and the Dwain Leverock of Irvine, Josh Conway.

Marress knew that they were in for a game, as they had a closely-fought battle with the same side earlier in the season. The Hillend openers looked as if they were ready for business, when David, having had his Frosties in the morning, removed one of the openers, thanks to a great catch from Gary McMeeking. This catch was probably in the top 5 of Marress catches this season, but was not in the same league as the "Double D" Catch at Hillhead, or the "Sprint" catch against Bees. Tony would go on to remove another of Hillends batsman.

Unfortunately, Dwain did not bowl to his usual standard. At times, it appeared as if he'd had one or two bottles of tonic, as his bowling was as dangerous as Dr.Mudunuris on Sunday. He, if I recall, did not take any wickets.

At the first change, Sgt.Bilko elected to go with the new Mark Hudson, Josh Taylor, and elected to do a spot of bowling. At this point, Hillend had lost 2 wickets, but were still looking to put on a healthy score. Batsman number 3 was beginning to look dangerous, until he thought it was appropriate to enter into conversation with the new 2nd team player, Stewart McCallum. Stewart, as all the club should know, as hit many centuries in his career, and is one of Irvines' top all-time run scorers. Alternatively, Stewart has been referred to as the "Mighty Duck" (source Gary McMeeking). After having entered into a debate with Stewart, the 3rd batsman for Hillend felt he could take on the Mighty Marress. That was until, the Athletic Ally Mitchell, ran for the ball at world-record pace, and took a catch that even the Squirrel would have been proud of. This game was still in the balance, and Marress knew that they needed to remain focussed.

Mike removed two of Hillends players, and then elected to change Josh for the infamous Chaitanya. At this point, Dwain decided that he would do some wicket-keeping. Chatty began to use his spin to immediate effect, by bowling the Hillend batsman at the crease. Subsequently after this, Dwain managed to stump one of the Hillend players from Chattys bowling, which left Hillend with 7 down, for roughly 13o runs.

Mike then decided to change his bowling attack, and elected to go with the usually reliable Gary. Sadly, Gary bowled one of the most expensive overs ever seen at our level, almost as expensive as Chatty on the Sunday. His one-over spell was so bad, that Mike elected to change Gary with Ally. Mike also felt that he needed a new dimension to his attack, and elected to go with the Irvine express, the Squirrel. Sadly, the Squirrel had forgot to take his shredded wheat, which with the bowling showed by Gary and others, left Hillend with a total of 239-7.

After a tea which was second-rate, when compared with the culinary skills of Susan, Mike elected to go with David Ingram, and the Kevin Pietersen of Irvine, Stewart McCallum.

Marress, thanks to some asssistance from Hillend, were making inroads into the home teams total, when around the 30-run mark, Stewart was bowled for 6 runs, which was close to his best-score for the 1sts this year. Robbie Stewart then came in to replace the "Mighty Duck", and promptly showed him what he should have been doing. Robbie started to build-up a match-winning innings, and was hitting shots out of the ground that even the ODM would have been proud of. Robbie and David built up a partnership of over 100 runs, before David was out for 36 runs. David showed some great composure with his batting, and looks one for the future. There was great hilarity amongst the Marress ranks, when David was dropped by the wicket-keeper, having been told by the aforementioned keeper that he didn't have much in his locker.

David was then replaced by Captain.Birds Eye. Sadly, Mike could only score 9, before he was out, and replaced by Josh Conway. Josh batted very well, and worked with Robbie to help Marress towards the target of 240. Marress duly met their target, with Robbie finishing on 140 not out, and Josh ending on 24 not out. Credit must be given to Robbie for his performance, with some of the shots played being nothing short of outstanding. Robbie was to continue his stats with his performance on Sunday, and recognition should be given to him for the role that he played in this as well.

This was the last game of the 2nds season. Under Mikes' stewardship, Marress managed to finish 3rd bottom, an improvement on previous years. There were good batting displays shown by David and Gary against Alps and Crow Road respectively. In terms of bowling, everyone will remember Chattys performance against Crow Road, with his own "Seventh Heaven". If Marress can keep the nucleus of this years squad, then there should be no reason why we can't look at pushing for promotion, or at the very least, improving our league position.

Third Time Lucky And....

We lose our third final.

Irvine found yet another means of losing a Scottish Trophy final and continued a run which would make even Dundee United seem like clinical match winners.

Although seeming to be in command at the halfway stage with a formidable total of 269, a lack of experienced front line bowlers was the Marress sides ultimate undoing against their northern opponents.

After winning the toss and deciding to bowl, Huntly were more intent on exercising their vocal chords than their catching hands and openers Bobby McPhee and Robbie Stewart took advantage of some slack fielding to get off to a great start, with Stewart in particular profiting from two drops to dominate an opening stand of 64 before running out his partner in a mid pitch mix up.

Stewart was joined by Drew Parsons and completed his century while the ex Scotland man chipped in with a fluent innings of 57. Irvine may have been set for an even higher score but when Parsons was out with Stewart soon following for a total of 132, some momentum was lost from the innings.

A few runs were also lost in the cause of battling global warming as both Stewart (who scored 98 in boundaries) and Parsons, lost some sixes to Freuchie's pitcuresque tree lined road side, having to settle for four instead as poor placement saw the ball make contact with branches and leaves on the way out of the ground on more than one occasion.

(This was the first time this season that we passed 200 though so on balance I think the excellent pitch and brilliant outfield probably just benefitted us more.)

Good lower order contributions from Jon Cowlan, and Graham Owens made sure that the eventual total of 269 was reached and Irvine were certainly confident of their chances of victory.

Confidence was built even higher when Parsons made inroads with two early wickets, but Huntly regrouped round their professional, who was to play a match winning innings of 121, and made steady progress towards their target. Accelerating with a final push of 170 runs from the last 20 overs and thoroughly deserved their victory.

Irvine didn't even get the consolation of bagging the man of the match award as Ali took the honours for a very good day at the office and guiding his team through.

"I can't fault anyone's effort and in the end we were just a bit short on the day." Captain Stuart McCallum can also reflecton a season which has saw their first divison spot preserved, a run to a national cup final, and with some enthusiastic youngsters filling spots in the second XI things should be on the up for the Marress cricketers in 2008.

a WIN!

Irvine Cricket Club preserved their Division One future on Saturday when they beat basement rivals Galloway with a battling team performance at Marress.

Irvine knew only a win would be good enough to give them a chance of staying in the top division and got off to a grim start when Robbie Stewart was out early. Pakastani professional Mohammed Nawaz dug deep to overcome the difficult batting conditions to make the top score of the match with 58. Solid contributions came from Drew Parsons, Graham Owens and Mike Ingram who all scored twenty apiece to guide the home side to a decent total of 160 for 7. Crucially the Irvine men batted with discipline to match their skill to ensure that Galloway could only collect 4 bowling points of the 6 they needed to ensure automatically staying above the home side. A good decision by the "brains trust" of McCallum and Parsons, selflessly executed by the team.

For Galloway avoiding defeat would preserve their league status and the indecision whether to go all out for victory or keep wickets in hand to ensure a draw seemed to adversley effect the performance of their batsman. Irvine were also delighted to see that Galloway decided to hold back their batting goliath, professional Choudry, until three wickets had fallen.

Irvine took full advantage and the usual aggressive and accurate start by Parsons secured two quick wickets, one with a full length dive by the Scotland man for a spectacular caught and bowled dismissal. Derek Neil bowled in his usual dependable manner to provide the perfect foil in an accurante opening spell and soon Galloway were struggling.

It was the unheralded Mike Ingram who made the decisive contribution with 3 wickets in a 5 over spell. chaitanya mudunuri taking two terrific catches to help his 2nd XI captain claim the dismissals.

When Nawaz dismissed the oppositon captain and then followed up to bowl Chouudry, Irvine were on the brink of victory. Parsons sealed it by bowling some unplayable spin and a stunned Galloway side were bowled out for only 57 runs and themselves plunged towards the bottom of the league. (Results elsewhere may still keep them up however, so pack the Andrex for next season GHL)

"A difficult season ruined by rain has at least seen some progress off the field with several youngsters coming through to take places in the first eleven under the guidance of coach Drew Parsons. We need to keep that progress going to improve things for next season and our next objective has to be getting more youngsters playing the game." Was the opinion of captain Stuart McCallum reflecting on a narrow escape and looking ahead to 2008.

The season is not quite over yet for the relieved Marres men as they travel to Freuchie again next Sunday for the 3rd attempt at playing their Scottish Trophy final against Huntly.

Captains Report ( Marress v Crow Road)

Today Marress fielded a very strong squad on paper. Captain Mike Ingram was desperate to win the toss and make the opposition bat first. Sadly the toss turned out to be a vital call today and sadly for Marress they lost it and were sent in to bat first.

Mike Ingram and Craig Sharpe opened the batting and made a slow and cautious start. The bowling attack was fairly acurate and was hard to get runs from it. In the 13th over Marress lost their first wicket (Craig Sharpe) for only 4 runs, he was clean bowled.
This brought young James Cooney to the crease and he was hoping for a better innings than he had shown so far this season, sadly he was bowled in the 15th over for 0.

In next was Josh Conway, another batsman looking for some form, sadly he fended off a high bouncing delivery to short leg for 2 and Marress were struggling at 36 for 3.

David Ingram came in next and although not batting with any confidence he managed to stay at the crease for 6 overs and put a small partnership on with Mike and just as things were looking better for the side David was cleaned bowled for 4. This left Marress on 67 for 4.

Just as Mike was thinking things cannot get much worse, in came Chatanyia Mudunuri & Fernando and both were bowled for 0. Marress were looking like they were sinking faster than the Titanic as they were now on 67 for 6.

At the point Mike Ingram had made up his mind that he would have to try and dominate the bowlers and keep as much of the strike as possible. He managed to do this with the help of the new batsman Ally Mitchell. Both Ally and Mike put on a partnership of 28 before Ally was caught for 0. Marress now 95 for 7.

At this point mike looked at the remaining batsman and thought if they could make a grand total of 125 they would be doing well. Mike turned out to be totally wrong with his thoughts as the new batsman Gary McMeeking entered the arena like a gladiater.

Gary began slowly by hitting the first ball he faced for 4 and two balls later he did it again. Gary was on top form and together with Mike they destroyed the Crow Road bowlers. A partnership of 102 was made before Mike was given LBW (again) for 106. A fine and responsible innings for the skipper. The score had now moved to 198 for 8 and Marress were looking good.

In came Josh Taylor next and he was very nervous( sweat was dripping down his neck) as he took his guard. Josh was desperate for some runs as he had shown during the week that he was a good batsman, yet he had only managed to score 1 run in matches. Josh steadied himself as he faced his first delivery and he hit the best shot of the day to the boundary, quickly followed by another. He received a standing ovation from the grandstand as he lashed the ball all over the pitch. The next man out was Gary McMeeking for an excellent personal best of 42.

This introduced the last pairing and they added a few more runs before Josh Taylor was bowled for 15, another personal best.

Marress were finally all out for 218.

After another fantastic tea Marress set about their business in attempting to bowl their opposition out.

Mike Ingram & Josh Conway opened the bowling and had no luck, the score moved onto 53 before their was finally a break through made, it came in the way of the Doctor (Chatty) he cleaned bowled the opener. (you have to bowl them out or catch them as no LBW are ever given it seems). Chatty quickly made his second breakthrough and we had them 62 for 2.

Was the Marress going to get the 3rd win of the season??????????

David Ingram came on at the other end and very quickly had a spell of bowling worthy of any league, he had 3 batsmen in the clubhouse within 5 overs and Crow Road were reeling at 87 for 5.
Another wicket by Chatty and they were 87 for 6.

After several bowling options were used Marress finally made another breakthrough with Chatty getting his 4th and final wicket of the day and this left Crow Road on 127 for 7. A quicker delivery by Craig Sharpe saw him take the next wicket and they were 127 for 8.

Victory was getting closer, although at this stage their were only 6 over to go.

Sadly only one more opportunity presented itself, but this was dropped and Crow Road survived to the end and scraped a draw.

A very good all round performance and a special mention must go to the nominated Man of the Match GARY McMEEKING for his excellent 42.

Great North Run

Folks, as some of you may or may not be aware, I shall be doing the Great North Run with the 2nd XI Captain Mike Ingram (Captain Pugwash), and David Ingram (Tony the Tiger). Irvine beat the rain, East Kilbride but not Hillhead

Irvine came so close to a dramatic league victory on Saturday only to lose narrowly, but put their disappointment behind them to advance in the Scottish Trophy on Sunday.

Hillhead were the visitors to Marress on Saturday and found an Irvine side resolved to improve on the heavy defeat inflicted in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season. Batting first Robbie Stewart and Bobby McPhee showed determination to blunt the Hillhead bowling attack. When McPhee was eventually out Stewart combined in partnership with Mohammed Nawaz before he too was out 29.

Nawaz & Drew Parsons continued to accumulate runs and things were looking rosy for the home side but, as so often the case with the Irvine batting line up, wickets were lost in the crucial middle part of the innings leaving Irvine to struggle to only 129, with Parsons joining Stewart as top scorer.

Irvine's bowling has been their strongest suit this season and Parsons underlined their battling intent by taking a wicket in the first over of the Hillhead reply. Ruchin Filander was quick to follow up with another breakthrough and Irvine were on the hunt for victory.

Some quality batting from Hillhead's Australian players started to take the match away from Irvine and the return of Parsons was a last throw of the dice as the Glasgow side moved towards ther target. Parsons was inspired as he ripped through the batting line up with some superb swing and seam bowling. Taking the key wicket of the opposition professional. The scottish international star finished with a personal haul of six wickets.

Nawaz's wily spin bowling was tying things up at the other end and with great catches from Bobby McPhee and Craig Sharp supporting the bowling effort, Hillhead slumped to nine men out with 22 runs still required from their last pair.

To their great credit however this pair batted sensibly and calmly, biding their time until Parsons & Nawaz had bowled their alloted overs and managed to hit the winning runs off the remaining Irvine bowlers.

The narrow defeat for the home team keeps Irvine down at the bottom of the league table and their battle to avoid the drop continues next week against another of the league's better sides, Kelburne.

The Paisley team will also provide the opposition on Sunday in the Scottish Trophy after Irvine pcked themselves up to win their quarter final tie with East Kilbride. Star performers with the bat were Parsons & Nawaz who got the innings off to a fine start with a stand of 89, although youngsters Craig Sharp and David Ingram also made solid contributions.

The bowling effort was lead by Nawaz with four wickets for the loss of only four runs while Derek Neil, Euan Morrison, and Josh Conway all chipped in with two apiece. Fielding highlights were fine catches by Conway and new boy Jamie Doolan.

Both Saturday and Sunday matches start at 1pm and Irvine will be hoping for good weather and a strong turn out of players for both matches.

Marress rout was revenge

IRVINE celebrated an unlikely victory after a resounding bowling performance routed Partick in a crucial Western Union match on Saturday at Marress.

Division one is very tight at the bottom with four teams battling to avoid the drop and Irvine had the added incentive of seeking payback for an embarrassing defeat earlier in the season. Victory carried a higher than usual premium.

Winning looked unlikely after the home side's batting effort could only struggle to a paltry 109 total. It was a different story with ball in hand however as opening bowlers Drew Parsons and Ruchin Filander set about the Partick batsmen with resolve, bowling with pace and accuracy to ensure that the Glasgow side were immediately struggling to reach their undemanding target.

Some nerves were apparent in the field though as three separate catching chances were put down and it looked as though Irvine could not defend their small total.

Parsons eventually made the first breakthrough and facing spin bowling accuracy from the other end from new Pakastani recruit Mohammed Nawaz, Partick started taking risks with their running and lost another wicket to a direct hit run out as Irvine's fielding confidence started to rise.

The match turned with a smart bit of thinking from Filander who, fielding close to the bat, was too sharp for his opponent with another run out to keep the Irvine charge going.

Mark Hughes made the next vital contributions, first taking a well judged high catch off the bowling of Filander and following up with a first ball dismissal of the next Partick batsman to take Irvine to the brink of victory.

Filander created yet another run out with a more conventional piece of throwing from the outfield leaving the way clear for Parsons to return and claim the matchwinning final wicket with an assist from keeper McPhee. Partick bowled all out for 85, giving Irvine an exhilarating victory by 24 runs.

Captain Stuart McCallum summed up the effort: “Our bowling pulled us out the mire today and it would be nice to get some decent runs on the board for a change. I'll take the victory though and work on improving for next week”

Next week Irvine play misfiring Hillhead at home with a 1pm start, seeking to turn around another heavy early season defeat in the corresponding fixture and on Sunday travel again to play East Kilbride in the Scottish Trophy in yet another match affected by the weather.

Irvine win bowl out to progress in Scottish Trophy

irvine traveled to the capital to fulfill the Scottish trophy fixture, heavy rain in edinburgh made the pitch unplayable, as a result was needed the match was to decided by a bowl out ( penalty shoot in footballing terms- each team nominates 5 bowlers- each to bowl 2 balls at open wicket). irvine started the bowl out with coach Drew Parsons who was as accurate as ever ripping the off stump twice in as as many balls giving irvine 100% start, murrayfied did them self no favors when their opening bowler was way off target. leading 2-0 after the first round it was the irvine's pro turn to extend the lead but missed the stumps narrowly both the time and murrayfield managed what was to be their only wicket of the bowl out. Derrick Neil was next missing one and hitting one, with Irvine leading 3-1 Ewan Morrison was next and bowled two great deliveries knocking the wickets both times giving Irvine an unassailable 5-1 lead and when the next murrayfield bowler missed there were scenes of jubilation in the irvine camp. Mike Ingram completed the bowl out hitting one and missing the other.
Irvine won 6-1 making the 150mile round trip worthwhile.

In the weeks other matches 1st XI traveled to dumfries to play StMichaels but the match was called off with out a ball being bowled.
2nd XI traveled to glasgow to play whiteinch, mike won the toss again for the... (sorry mike lost count) and put the opposition into bat, white inch were 70/3 in 20 overs when play had to be abandoned due to heavy rain.

Captains Report (Marress v Hillend)

I am afraid that a game that has caused much embarrassment to the Marress team.

Hillend bottom of the league and fielding a bunch of under 13's and a few no hopers and 2 experienced players.

They batted first and Marress continued their fine standing as probably the best bowling attack in the league and had the opposition all out for a small sum of 80 runs.

Marress who only had 10 players still should have cruised to victory yet somehow managed to give another dismal batting performance and were bowled out for a pathetic 61 runs.

I cannot make myself write a full match report as this has been my most disapointing weekend sofar this season. I do not mind getting beat, but the manner in which we lost this match was almost unbelievable.

We will all have to improve our batting skills in the coming weeks so as to avoid dropping to the bottom of the league ourselves.

The season looked full of promise and there was a hint of a chance of possibly promotion, but now we will do well to finish mid table.

Sorry for the depressing report, but maybe it will motivate you all to do better next week.

Captains Report (Hillhead Warriors v Marress) 17-06-07

Another weekend that fortunately for this match was played on the Sunday and not the usual Saturday as it would most certainly have been rained off but for this.

Due to game being played on the Sunday, Marress fielded there strongest team so far this season. The team were very confident that they could and should win.

It was a day in which the toss was probably not too important and the Marress Captain was unsure what to do. That decision was taken away from him as the coin landed on heads and he lost the toss and was forced to field first.

The game got off to a slow but deliberate start from the opposition and they just plodded away against the bowling of Mike & David Ingram.

After 9 overs Mike knew he had to make changes as neither bowler was doing anything special.

This introduced the first change and on came Josh Conway.He cleaned bowled the opener in his first over and 5 balls later Josh had the other opener back in the house, thanks to a great catch by Scott Wilson. Later in his spell saw Josh get an edge of the next batsmens bat and he was caught by the new star wicketkeeper Robbie Ferguson.

At the other end there was very little support bowling and the Captain tried out Sachin & Sharp without any success.

With Josh showing signs of fatigue after humping around the excess pounds that he has gained over the winter, the Captain made the change that everybody was anticipating. Yes the intoduction of top wicket taker Chaitanya.

Within 8 deliveries he had his first wicket thanks to a spectacular catch from the flying Craig Sharp. He managed to turn a certain 4 ball into the finest catch this season(yes even better than Derek Parks earlier in the season). It was flying over his head when Craig stretched out his arm and managed to claw onto it like an eagle grabbing its prey.(Absolutely Grrrrrreat!).
Next ball and Chatty had his man LBW and a familiar pattern was developing. The Hillhead men were reeling on 78 for 5 and Marress were cruising.

2 overs later and Chatty had 2 more batsmen cleaned bowled and Hillhead were 84 for 7 and sinking quicker than the Titanic.

Somehow Hillead battled away and they held out and it took a further 12 overs before another wicket was taken, it was a catch that was taken like the great PELE, MR.Derek Park managed to chest the ball first, then nontchally plucked it from between his ample Double D's and this left Hillhead on 119 for 8.

In the 44th over David Ingram got another wicket as the Grrrreat Sharp took a fine catch, 132 for 9.
Sadly the Marress side were unable to make that final breakthrough and the Hillhead side finished on 146 for 9. A score that Marress thought was well within there capabilitty.

Tea was taken and the batting lineup was announced. In hind site this was the Captains first mistake of the day, he elected to move himself down the order to no.8 and give other batsmen the chance to show their potential. At the time the Captain had no worries about the lineup and was fairly confident that his team should be able to get the runs required.

The openers were Sachin & Chaitanya and it only took 9 deliveries before Mudunuri was caught playing a dreadful shot. The Marress men were 6 for 1.
This introduced Scott Wilson and both batsmen were doing well when Scott was cleaned bowled with the score on 34.
David Ingram came to the crease next and both batsmen looked comfortable for a while until David played a poor shot and lobbed it straight into there hands leaving the team on 49 for 3.
At this moment Mike was unsure wether to change the batting order and move himself up the order, but decided not to in the end.
Craig sharp entered the arena next and was quickly on his way back to the house with a poor shot also, Marress were now 53 for 4.

As Mike watched with disbelieve as his team crumbled, Derek Park also came and went with only 6 runs being added 59 for 5.

All along Sachin defended for his life and was doing a fine job until he succumbed to the pressure of the tight bowling and was given LBW (PLUMB) with the score now on 65 for 6.

Disaster was upon us and only one man could save the day. MR reliable Mike Ingram (Captain Birdseye, Mannering or is it Pugwash).

Mike entered the arena with only one other recognised batsmen still to come to the crease and knew he would have to start to HOGG the strike and protect the batsmen.

Mike batted with Josh Conway for a short while until Josh was bowled with the score now 97 for 7. This would then bring in the last recognised batsman Ronnie Gilliland.

At this time Mike was unsure how to approach the match, they only need another 60 runs to win, but he knew he could not afford to take too many chances. Lose his wicket and they would almost certainly lose the match.

Unfortunately as the score moved onto 108, Ronnie was caught by a great catch and this tipped the balance into Hillhead's favour.

It left Mike with young 15 year old Robbie Ferguson and there was still 8 overs to go needing 39 to win.

Mike decided tactics with Robbie and it was a case of trying to score with the first 4-5 deliveries and scramble a single from the last ball.

To Robbies credit he did a fantastic job, he not only backed up very well, but defended some nasty deliveries.

Mike attacked when he could, but with 3 overs to go knew the total was too big and the risks of going for it were too high, so he set about playing for the draw and managed to get the score up to 136 before being bowled off the last ball of the day.

This left the match drawn.

Sadly it was a good draw in the end, but with the team that was selected it should have been a win.

Irvine v EK Match Report

Irvine didn't lose on Saturday, but they snatched a draw from the jaws of victory against Lanarkshire rivals East Kilbride at Torrance House. The two clubs have much previous history between them and games tend to be closely fought affairs with no quarter asked or given and this Western Union Division One fixture was to prove no exception.

After losing the toss Irvine bowled first and already missing some key personnel from the oval ball game who were attending the wedding of a team mate, might have been expected to wilt under the hot conditions. Drew Parson and Euan Morrison set about their task with the new ball though and Parsons soon proved too good for the first EK batsman making the breakthrough before double figures was reached by the home side. With Morrison bowling well for no luck it was the Irvine fielders who found the heat too much as two catching chances went abegging, one decidedly simple and the other far harder, but both allowing their opponents to settle and build a decent score.

Irvine stuck to their task though and with Morrison finding some success, taking a wicket personally and then creating a run out with a powerful throw, and when the recalled Chaitanya Mudunuri struck with his first ball, hopes of chasing a low total in the afternoon heat were high, hightened further after Morrison fired out another two opponents with successive quick deliveries. To their credit though East Kilbride persevered and their South African players were clearly enjoying the warm conditions as they built a big stand to seemingly take the game away from Irvine.

Irvine were no less dogmatic however and when Parsons finally done for one of the Boer duo, Morrison responded to take his first ever league 5 wicket performance for the loss of 47 runs, He was helped too by catches from Robbie Stewart and Craig Sharp as Irvine found their hands at last. By the time Mudunuri finished the EK innings with the last wicket, a target of 185 had been set which both teams were quite happy with given the ebb and flow of the innings.

Another experimetal opening pair saw Robbie Stewart and Chaitanya Mudunuri take the reply to 27 before Mudunuri popped up a catch in the 8th over. Kevin Giddings started confidently with a well struck boundary, but while it was a welcome return to the team for the popular and talented batsman, it was not one he will want to remember as he misjudged a straight ball to be bowled without offering a stroke.

With the EK new ball attack in full flow, coach Drew Parsons and experience batter Stewart consolidate, then take the attack to the opposition pacemen with a partnership of 74, before Stewart must have let the heat go to his head and give his wicket up with a lofted shot into the outfield. Undettered Parsons combined with Morrison to add another 29 before the player coach went in pursuit of victory with a firmly hit swat that a yard either side would have given him six runs but instead was clung on to by a relieved boundary fielder.

With 50 runs required for victory and 5 wickets remaining the game was certainly in the balance, but very next ball the advantage tilted to EK when Morrison was bowled playing a shot that suggested he was in a hurry to hear the speeches at the evening reception. Irvine were now left with little option but to attempt to avoid defeat by not being bowled out. And when other wickets fell, teenagers Craig Sharp (15) and Josh Conway (19) combined to survive the barrage of pace from one end and wiles of spin for the other, to remain not out and secure the draw for Irvine. More importantly dening the victory to EK in what is already looking like being a very closely contested division.

"A game we would have lost 4 weeks ago" was captain McCallum's summation at the end of the match. Which probably reflects the continued good work that Parsons continues to put in with the team at the Tuesday & Thursday training sessions. Next Saturday it is back to Marress with the visit of Titwood, the strong reserve XI of Glasgow powerhouse unit Clydesdale. Scottish cricket allows elite teams to field reserve sides in regional competitions so the visit on Saturday is a bit like an Old Firm reserve side playing in the lower divisions of the SFL. Irvine can expect a tough game against a team of current age grade future full internationalists and others with high level club experience. A 1pm start at the Marress ground and all spectators are always welcome

Captains Report ( Marress v The Alps)

The game had all the makings of whoever won would be very strongly fancied to be promoted.

Unfortunately for the Marress team they were without at least 5 regular players due to several reasons and this meant that the Captain was looking in every phone book he had in his dungeon to try and find 11 players. Sadly by the time the match was due to start the captain could only muster up 10 players, one of whom had to start work at 5.00pm.

With this in mind the toss was probably the most crucial toss of the season and just when you need to win it lady luck deserts you and you've guessed it we lost the toss and were put into bat.

Mike Ingram knew that it would take all the resiliance of the major player within the team to produce their very highest standards to enable the Marress men to compete.

Mike and Gary McMeeking opened the batting and both batsmen were looking fairly comfortable, when Gary lost his discipline and tried to go for a big slog and was cleaned bowled.
This introduced David Ingram and Mike immediately went to david and asked for a controlled and disciplined effort.
Both players set about building an innings and David was showing great maturity in his batting and was relishing the challenge.
The score had progressed to 70/2 and the Marress men were well on top and cruising towards highest batting score for over 2 seasons. It was here that a bad batting mistake by Mike was made and he was caught by gully on 46. In reflection mike knew this was a day that he should have made 100+ but it wasn't to be.
This left David on 16 and introduced the ODM(One Dimensional Man)Derek Park(aka the squirrel). Derek did not waste much time in confirming his title as within 2 deliveries the opposition had 6 players awaiting his booming shot on the leg side boundary. it was a joy to watch as Derek unleashed his cannonball shots at the oppostion and he quickly moved onto 17, this included yet another massive 6. Sadly the one certainty with Derek is he will either by caught on the boundary or bowled and he was caught on this occasion.
The score had moved onto 94/3 and under normal circumstances this would have been a very good start but we always knew that the tail began at number 5 and we quickly lost Josh Taylor(King Duck). Ram Yerra came to the crease next and built a partnership with David worth 49 runs until Ram was dismissed LBW for 9. This left the score on 148/5 and James cooney was quickly in and out for 1 run.
This left David on 25 runs and the propostion of all the remaining batsmen had never even played before never mind bat.
David knew he would have to try and dominate when he had the chance and also protect the other batsmen when needed ( HOG THE STRIKE).
With the introduction of Ally Mitchell (debutant player) both he and David managed to hang around and David slowly dominated the bowlers with some classical shots and some inventive ones. The game was running out of overs and David was edging(literally) closer to his maiden fifty. With 3 over to go David required 9 runs, he eventually got down to needing 4 off the last over. First ball was fielded and the nerves were showing, was David going to miss out on this big opportunity. He then managed to get 2 off the third delivery and had 3 more balls to get that illusive first 50.
On the forth ball he tried to hit it out of the ground, but it went high into the air and was heading straight at the oppositons Captain, the batsmen set off for the runs and David knew that if it was dropped he would be able to come back for a second run and get his 50. Luck was obviously on Davids side as the oppos Captain dropped it and the 50 was Davids (Congratulations).
The Marress team finished on 172 for 5 and went into tea knowing that only a fantastic fielding display would prevent the opposition from reaching this total.

The game resumed with Marress taking the field with only 9 players and 3 regular bowlers. The Captain made the breakthrough early and had their opener back in the pavillion for 5 runs. Sadly this was the only break they got for a long time and the Alps were slowly well up to the run rate due to the lack of fielders. James Cooney came onto bowl after 12 over and between Mike, David and James they got through the first 20 overs, but still with the one wicket only.
Mike decided that something had to change so he introduced young Josh Taylor to deliver some of his off turns. The field was all put back to the boundary with the expectation of big shots, only for Josh to clean bowl their opener first ball, 4 balls later Josh got an edge of the bat and Ram Yerra made a great lunging catch and within the space of 1 over the Alps had gone from 80 for 1 to 80 for 3. Was the tide changing????
Next over and David cleaned bowled batsmen no.4 and they were 80 for 4. The team was bouyant and optomistic.
Sadly that was to be the last wicket taken as the next Alps batsmen steered their team to victory with a stand of 93.

Although the Marress team was defeated, a lot of encouragement was taken from this game and considering the team that was put on the field, it was a fantastic achievment.

Next week we should have all the regulars back and it will be a tough decision for the captain in his team selection.

IRVINE Cricket Club Irvine put their horror start to the season behind them on Saturday with a terrific win in a close game against old rivals Glasgow High in a Brunton Miller Western Union Division One match at Maress.
The Marress Men batted first on a good wicket but were not helped by the lush and Irvine seemed set for another poor result as the experiment of opening the batting with Euan Morrison failed to work and he was quickly followed to the pavilion by his more experienced partner Robbie Stewart.
However Kiwi rugby star Mark Hughes combined with Scottish international and player coach Drew Parsons to provide some progress before Parsons lost concentration and was comprehensively bowled.
Hughes, however, was unfazed and continued his progress in tandem with old stager Graham Owens, as he went on to make his first half century for the club.
With the score on 112 Hughes became the first victim of some highly erratic umpiring when he was given out LBW after making contact with bat rather than pad to a ball which was clearly missing the stumps in any case. It was a cruel end to what was a fine innings of 59 made in difficult circumstances and was to prove the highest score of the match by some way.
Owens left no room for ambiguity in his dismissal when he departed following a skied catch in the outfield and that was the signal for yet another familiar Irvine batting collapse.
However it has to be said on this occasion that the home side were not helped by some more questionable decisions from the match officials.
Ultimately Irvine were disappointed to finish on 134 all out but the general feeling among the players was that if they bowled and fielded well they were still in with a chance of winning the match.
And that’s the way it turned out as Parsons and Morrison bowled with great control from the start, with Morrison making the first breakthrough before wily campaigner Derek Neil pitched in with a vital second wicket.
Hughes kept the pressure up with an accurate spell of bowling while Parsons made three vital contributions with the ball. First, in a spell of slow bowling, he accounted for the opposition professional before following up with a piece of inspired fielding to pick up and throw down the wickets with only a single stump to aim at and account for another dangerous opposition batsman.
Hughes then finished his bowling spell with another vital wicket to turn the game on its head.
Morrison and Hughes then bowled to the finish and, with the help of catches from Parsons and captain Stuart McCallum, brought Irvine to the brink of victory with the opposition nine wickets down for 121 runs.
And fittingly it was Hughes who sealed victory, comprehensively bowling the final batter and just managing to sneak a deserved man of the match award from Parsons, whose influence on and off the field is growing with each match and training session.

"This was our first victory and the first time we had a full strength side out this season,” said a delighted McCallum.
“However the strength in depth of the squad will certainly be tested on Saturday next week when Irvine travel to East Kilbride, as much of our rugby-playing contingent will be attending a teammates’ wedding.”

However their absence opens up an opportunity for some of the 2nd XI who recorded an away victory at Glasgow High with Chaitanya Mudunuri starring with both bat and ball — taking seven wickets before going on to score 30 runs and assist skipper Mike Ingram to secure an impressive win.

Irvine Cricket Club are always looking for new players who are keen to try the game and those with some experience who want to return to play.
Training is at 6.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Marress and juniors in particular are encouraged to come down on the Tuesday.

Captains Report (Crow Road v Marress)

This was a match that had the expectancy of an all time great performance. The team line suggested that this was probably the strongest 2nd Team that Irvine had put on the field in over 3 years.
Could the Marress men live up to the expectations that were talked about during the week's practise sessions.
The day started off with the weather being very unpredictable, a few light showers during the morning time and then it began to brighten up as the morning developed.
The game thankfully was on. And off set the Marress team.
On arrival at GHK everything seemed fine, at 12.55pm the Captain was frantically on the phone to Messr's (Reuban, Bennett, Ram & Sachin) somehow none of them could find the biggest Sports complex in Glasgow(even with sat nav). After a few sharp words & directions from the local lad (Ronnie Gilliland) the 4 of them arrived just before start time.(Phew!)
The Captains made the toss and Mike Ingram won (3rd time in a row) and elected to field first.

The Marress men entered the field eventually, and the game began with Mike Ingram opening the bowling along with Josh Conway. The opening spell had limited success and the Crow Road team were slightly on top, although runs were quite hard to come by.
Eventually Mike Ingram made the break through and had the middle stump ripped from the ground and the Crow Road opener was on his way. Very quickly after that Mike had the next man out with a piece of brilliant fielding. The batsmen thumped a shot from his bowling and must have thought it would get past the diving Mike Ingram's left hand.(obviously looks are deceiving and Mike flung himself to his left like Petr Cech, grabbed the ball and threw it like a bullet to keeper Euan Bennett and the batsmen was on his way).
The game then went through a dull period where not a lot was happening(the squirrell was sleeping, so much so that Ronnie Gilliland had to wake him up under the rugby posts), it was the time of the match in which both teams were searching to gain the initiative. At this point commeth the hour, commeth the man (Dr. Chaitanya Mudunuri) After a few different bowling changes the captain turned to the Dr. to make something happen. And happen it did, unless you were their to witness it yourself, you wouldn't believe it. Chatty gave one of the best bowling displays ever seen in the 2nd Team. He ripped the heart, lungs and soul out of the opposition and had them all back in the pavilion for 111 all out. With figures of 14.2 overs 7 wkts for 21 runs (fantastic).

This brought the interval and as the Marress men left the field they were very buoyant, but not over confident. The team went for a well earned break and to settle down to a cup of tea and a few sarnies/cakes etc.
Unbelievably as we all arrived at the table for a bite to eat, we quickly realised that (Gordon Ramsey had not been at the GHK kitchen) and had to be very quick to grab one of the door wedges(sandwich) and if you were like grease lightning you might get a biscuit. We all squabbled to see who would get the last sandwich and kit kat and then tried to force it down without so much as a cup of tea. (thank you for the delights GHK).
Never the less, we departed from the room (I would like to call it a dining room, but you need to be dined to call it that). and began preparation for the 2nd innings.
Captain Mike Ingram took the fight to the Crow's along with Euan Bennett. Sadly Bennett was bowled early doors and this introduced the Man of the Match the Dr.
Together with Mike they put on a partnership of 60 and were cruising to victory when the Dr. was given LBW by his ex best pal James Cooney. The Dr. departed and this introduced David Ingram. A few cautionary words by the skipper as he entered the arena and obviously this meant nothing as David tried to knock the ball out of the ground first ball. Luckily the delivery was not on target and he was given a rollicking by the skipper to sort his batting style out.
From that moment onwards Mike Ingram took control of the match and dispatched all the bowlers around the ground, which took the team within sight of victory.
With a momentary loss of concentration, Mike was given LBW with only 3 runs required for victory. Josh Conway was ecstatic at the opportunity to finished the match and he did so in style with a fantastic top edge for 4.
A very well polished performance, which will be hard to match in the coming weeks. A lot of the players will be promoted to the first team next week and this will require the need for the remaining players to continue the excellent work.

ra parsons [ed: hereinafter to be referred to as "judas"] and his new irvine teammates were the visitors to shawholm in the western union on saturday. and when all was said and done the 'holmboys had seen off drooper and his new pals in a game interrupted by rain on more than one occasion.

the 'holmboys batted first on a soft-ish deck with nomy and kash' up top. sadly for this column the breakthrough, when it came, saw judas nip out nomy as the latter nicked one to slip. 14 for 1. baby batting at three fared little better as he was trapped leg-before by j iscariot too after hitting only a couple of singles. mr p's return to paradise was getting off to just too good a start it appeared. kash' then perished, cleaned up by morrison, and things really were a tad dodgy: 36 for 3 no less. shak', tho'. restored a little bit of order to proceedings in his partnership with mohsin, both chipping in with useful contributions (19 and 27 respectively).

and rafay carried on the good work from the 'holmboys' middle order with a brisk 47 that included five 4s and a maximum - not the day's only big 'uns tho', mohsin having smacked a couple in his knock. then, with zahid continuing his useful form with the blade (27), and rahan chipping in with 12 on his return to 'holmboy colours, the guys managed to post almost 200 - 194 to be precise.

195 to win would be a stiff test of judas & co. and, with play heading into the evening murkiness, batting wouldn't be easy. and so it proved.....eventually. the run chase started really well for irvine with opener stewart playing fluently. 68 was on the 'board before the first wicket fell - mcphee caught by rafay of mohsin's bowling [ed: remember that combo'!]. then, after number three hughes had been trapped lbw by sabir, it was entry ra parsons. drooper's scored a number of memorable big scores on the hallowed ground but no-one watching on saturday wanted him to get another one! and, when he'd reached 14, it happened: "caught a ashraf, bowled m ali" - thank you and good-night vienna. drooper had holed out to extra cover where rafay had held the catch.

from this point - 125 for 4 - it was all downhill. the irvine batting collapsed as a number of the youngsters had one eye on the 18th birthday/disco just starting in the clubhouse! 125 for 4 became 155 all out as kash' and rahid ran thru' the middle order and tail. kash' finished with 3 for 4, whilst rahid notched up 4 for 44.

Marress vs Scottish Indians 26/05/07

BRAVE MARRESS GET SHOT DOWN BY INDIANS

Yesterday(26/5/07), Marress lost to the table toppers Scottish Indians Cricket Club. In this titanic tussle, Marress under the stewardship of Master David Ingram won the toss, and elected to field (big surprise there!) Looking at the team we were about to face, and getting the scouting reports from chatty (chaitanya), it was thought that Marress would struggle to get anything out of this game. With the normal skipper Capt. Mike Ingram (aka Captain Birds eye) being called up to the 1sts, it was left to David to captain the team, and with Cyril being asked to be the vice-captain for the day.

Marress decided to open their bowling with David and the Muttiah Muralitharan of Marress, that is Chaitanya Mudunuri. The bowling got of to a good start, and Marress had their 1st wicket from the majestic bowling of chatty, with the opener uday returning to the dressing-room for 1. Shortly after this, chatty repeated his previous result, and bowled the Indians Shiva for 5. The questions on everyones mind at this point where:

a) Was there any stopping this bowling spell from chaitanya
and
b) Could David take a wicket and try to repeat his performance from the Bees game?

The answer to question b was duly displayed, when David darted to the wicket, and bowled the Indians Pratap, thanks to the great catch from the fantastic Robbie Fergusson.
In relation to question a- although chatty managed to take another scalp he was running short of overs and one of the indian batman was getting on top of the bowling. At this point, Marress decided to break for drinks, and then decided on a change of bowling, with both Master Ingram and chatty being replaced by James Cooney and Reuben Tauro respectively. Cooneys bowling at times was erratic, however he did get two wickets. Both these wickets came from some superb catches from Reuben, and from Jamie Doolan (who was still feeling the effects of his previous nights escapades),jamie's catch as good as dericks from the week before. Reuben exhibited some magnificent bowling, and produced 3 wickets from 4 overs. It was then left to chaitanya to take the last wicket from the Scottish Indians, which left the visiting team all out for 140 runs. This was a tremendous effort from the Marress side, with both the bowling and fielding being exemplary from all. With Robbie Fergusson displaying some great wicket-keeping, Euan Bennett really has a fight on his hands to get his place back in the side.
With the Indians all out, it was left to Marress to try and win this game. Although 140 may not seem a great total, it has to be remembered that Marress were without their top run-scorer, Mike Ingram and were playing with few rookies.

David decided that the batting should open with Jamie Doolan and Ram. At 4 for no loss, Jamie was bowled by the visiting sides Kiran for 0. Chaitanya then came to the crease, and looked to build a fine partnership with Ram. This they did do and when they were dominating the bowling chatty was crazily ran out for 17 soon after hitting a big six, leaving Marress on 49-2. The game was still in the balance, and it was clear that the visiting side were worried, and felt that the umpiring may have been a tad harsh (although it was evident who set the standards in the first innings). This was quite clearly not the case, with every call being quite clearly correct from Messrs Cooney and Park. David Ingram then came to the crease, and tried to establish a partnership with Ram. Unfortunately, David was caught, after top-edging the ball from the bowling of the visiting sides Kiran for 2. Gary McMeeking then came to the field, and tried to look at boosting the total or Marress. Sadly, Gary was clean bowled for a duck, which left him wandering back to the pavilion, much to the hilarity of his mates at the side of the pitch. Reuben then came into bat, with Marress on 59-4. Reuben was batting with Ram, and both tried to help Irvine towards reaching their total. Sadly, Ram was soon caught for 9, a decision from the umpire that enraged the man, and left Robbie coming into bat. Sadly, Robbie having no sooner entered the arena, had to depart for 0. Cooney then came into the bat with Reuben, and both looked as if they knew what they were doing, before Reuben was run out in an unsporting manner from the bowling of Avinash. The one-dimensional batsmen that is Derrick Park, then entered the arena, and tried to take the game to the Indians with Cooney, before Conney was sent packing. The KP of Marress, Derrick, was then left to try and salvage some pride for Marress. He was left with the tail-enders, Alistair and Callum Graham, two novices to the game. Callum was bowled from Kiran, which left KP trying to assist Alistair, on what to do. Quite surprisingly, Alistair managed to last an over, before he was bowled for o from the bowling of Kiran. Marress were then left all out for 80, with the surprise being Derrick not out for the first time in his illustrious marress career.
Although Marress lost this game, there were a lot of positives to be taken from this game. The fielding performance was of a high standard, with no-one really disgracing themselves. The batting wasn't of a similar standard, but it can be worked on. Next weeks game sees us travelling to Crow Road, with hopefully Mike Ingram and Euan Bennett being available for selection.

Ayr vs Irvine: Rowan Cup 22/05

VALIANT IRVINE LOSE IN CUP SHOWDOWN

Tonight, Irvine travelled to Cambusdoon Sports Club to play Ayr, a National League side, in the Rowan Cup. Irvine put in a spirited performance, but sadly were to get beaten.

Having gone into bat first, Irvine set Ayr a challenge of obtaining 91 runs from 20 Overs. Although this total may not sound much, credit has to be given to the truly magnificent fielding performance displayed by the home side.

Irvine opened their batting with the recently signed Drew Parsons and the Kiwi Mark Hughes. Irvine reached 7 runs before Drew was sent back to the Pavilion in the 2nd Over. In the 3rd Over, we saw a massive 6 from Mark. However, three balls later, Mark was sent packing as well. This then left the veteran Robbie Stewart and the enigmatic Euan Morrison at the crease. After a boundary from Robbie, he was to be then unfortunately bowled by the home sides' Baird.
At this point, Irvine were on 23-3 in the 7th Over, and were looking at trying to push on their score. The inspirational skipper that is Stewart McCallum then came to the crease to try and help with the run total. Sadly after Stewart came to the crease, Euan was then caught for 5 from the bowling of Logan, making it a third wicket for the Ayr bowler, and which in turn, left Irvine looking despairingly at figures of 27-4 of 8 overs. Irvine were really struggling, and did not know where to look for a solution.

Thankfully, cometh the man, cometh the hour, and that man was the gallant Graeme Owens. The wicket-keeper and our Skipper looked at trying to gain some credibility for the team. This they did endeavour to do, and worked solidly on a partnership of 20 runs, before the Skipper was sent packing for 4 runs. Although his own personal score wasn't significant, Stewarts' role in the partnership with Graeme did help Irvine to the total of 47-5 of 12 Overs. With Mike Ingram, Captain Birds' Eye of the 2nd XI, and Graeme at the crease, Irvine could then look at setting Ayr a challenging total. This they did do, before Graeme was caught from the bowling of Mckelene for an impressive total of 25runs, which left Irvine on 62-6 of 15 Overs.

The rampaging bull that is known as Ruchin Filander then came to the crease to try and help Captain Birds' Eye in setting a challenging total. This they did with Mike finishing on 16 not out and Ruchin on 14, which meant Irvine finished on 90-6 of 20 Overs.
Although this may not seem great, the game was still very much in the balance at this point.

Sadly, it was not to be Irvines' day and Ayr did surpass our total. However, this was not without a good bowling and batting performance from our team.
The express-train that is Euan Morrison took one wicket, smashing one of the stumps out of the ground in the process. The magician that is Mark Hughes took the other two wickets, one being that of the Scottish Internationalist, Bruce Patterson.

Overall, there were a lot of plus points to be taken out of this display. If the performance that was shown tonight can be carried over into our league fixtures, then Irvine should be looking at securing their 1st Division status.

Captains Match Report (Maress v The Bees)

Todays match was very doubtful on Friday Night as the weather was very wet.
Fortunately today was very overcast, yet somehow Irvine managed to avoid the bad weather that was all around the West of Scotland.
The match began with the captains tossing the coin and Mike Ingram won the toss and elected to field.
The Marress men entered the pitch in a positive manner and awaited the opening batsmen.
David Ingram opened the bowling and before most players had time to get into position David had delivered his opening delivery and cleaned bowled his opponent for a "KING DUCK".
An unbelievable start, which set the tempo for the rest of the day.
2nd over of the game and Mike Ingram opened from the other end and not to be out done by David he cleaned bowled the other opener in his first over. A fantastic start and the Marress team was immediately on top.
5 overs later and The Bees were struggling at 20 for 5 as David Ingram was dominating the opposition with a spell of very fine bowling.
The Bees dug deep and managed to move the score onto 65 for 5 and were starting to develop their innings, the Marress team were looking for some inspiration and it came in the form of a fantastic catch by Derek Park. David Ingram bowled a full toss and the batsman top edged it behind the wicket keeper and Derek Park set off like a leopard in pursuit of its prey and managed to pull off one of the finest catches ever seen at the Marress Ground.(see photo)It was just what the team needed as they always knew that any score beyond 100 would really test their batting skills.
David Ingram finished his spell and this introduced one of the finest leg spinner in the league (Chaitanya Mudunuri) he quickly had the batsmen guessing how to play his bowling and he soon had 2 more batsmen back in the dressing room.
With young James Cooney from the other end he soon made a break through and The Bees were struggling at 86 for 9.
Mike Ingram cleaned up the innings and this left the Marress going into the interval needing 87 runs to win.
After another excellent tea, Mike Ingram and Gary McMeechan opened the batting and after a few quick shots by Gary he was bowled.
David Ingram entered next and he and his DAD put on a partnership of 23 until David was bowled, at this point Mike was wondering if the familiar collapse would take place and he was right. The next 2 batsmen quickly came and went and this brought Chaitanya to the wicket and this turned the game in favour of the Marress men. Mike and Chaitanya moved the score onto 83 for 4 and were in site of victory, when Mike was cleaned bowled by one of the best deliveries ever witnessed on the green blaze.
Thankfully Chaitanya took the Marress men over the winning line and gave the Marress men their first victory in over 12 months.

Ayr v Irvine- rowan cup

the first round match of rowan cup between Ayr and Irvine had been postponed, nets to go ahead as usual weather permitting.
Saturday's matches against hillhead and bees to go ahead as planned. Both irvine teams would be aiming for their first win with near strength teams available for selection.

partick v irvine

Irvine traveled to Partick with at least 7 of the of the regular first team players missing, with no first choice batsmen or bowlers in the line up it was a foregone conclusion that Irvine had no realistic change of winning, and the game plan was to come away with as many points as possible, Stuart won the toss and elected to field with the intension of securing as many bowling points as possible. Partick pilled on a massive 356, Irvine managed to pick up 8 wickets and with that 4 bowling points, Derick Neil was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets, Mike Ingram and Chaitanya Mudunuri managed 2 wickets each. Irvine went in to bat with no real intention of chasing the target and the aim was to score as many runs as possible for batting points, except for David Ingram and Stuart McCallum none of the batsmen managed to stick at the wicket and Irvine were all out for 86 the result being one of the worst suffered by Irvine.

Captain's Match Report

The first match of the season got off to a very good start for the Marress team. The team fielded and bowled to a very good standard. Once the cob webs were blown away(especially from Derek Parks shirt) the team settled down and went about the business in a very determined way.
Particular mention must go to Josh Conway and Craig Sharpe who did very well with the bowling. A couple of good catches from Craig Sharpe and David Ingram and we soon had the wickets tumbling.
The opening innings of whiteinch ended with them scoring 154 all out.
A score that had the Marress men feeling confident during the tea break(a special thanks to Susan Neil for all the help with the tea and great sandwiches).
After tea the batting order was announced and the Openers (Craig & Josh) entered the arena. Unfortunately the confidence off the field did not develop on the field and it was not long before we were 19 for 4. Mike Ingram then entered at No. 5 and tried to develop the innings but sadly the remaining batsmen offered a limited resistence and after a few small stands the Marress team were eventually bowled out for 102.

We must try to learn from our mistakes and try and get to training and practise hard on our game.

Our next match is at home to Ardencaple on Saturday, hopefully we will be able to build on a fairly promising start and secure our first win.

The opening match of the season started with Whiteinch winning the toss and electing to bat, Marress had a good day in the field, the highs included brilliant bowling by Craig and Mike, most of the away team finding it hard to read Craig's bowling and completely unable to play Mike, despite dropping at least 4 catches Marress managed to restrict Whiteinch to 154 all out. the second half was a completely different story, Marresss batting was shambolic with only Mike managing unbeaten 41, had it not been for 41 extras including 38 wides irvine would not have managed to cross the century mark
